No Man's Land

There was something I used to think about a lot when I was a child.

You know when you're driving and you pass a sign saying you've left one town?

And then, a few metres later, there's another sign welcoming you to the next one?

I was completely fascinated by the space between the two.

I used to think:

"So... this isn't that town anymore, but it isn't the next one yet."

What is that little stretch of road?

Who does it belong to?

What's it called?

In my mind, it was no man's land.

I remember looking out of the car window, searching for that invisible place.

As if those few metres were a special territory.

A place that didn't belong anywhere.

Today, that memory makes me smile.

But it also makes me think that perhaps I've always been deeply curious about the spaces in between.

Those moments when one thing has already ended, but the next hasn't quite begun.

The truth is, life is full of these no man's lands.

Relationships that have ended, but we still don't know who we are without them.

Jobs we've left behind, before knowing what comes next.

Versions of ourselves that no longer exist, while new ones are still being born.

And those places can feel uncomfortable.

Because we like knowing where we are.

We like names.

Definitions.

Signs.

But perhaps there's something incredibly beautiful about that in-between space.

Perhaps not everything needs a name straight away.

Perhaps there are moments when the only thing we need is to stay in that no man's land for a while.

Without rushing towards the next sign.

Because sometimes, it's precisely there that we're being transformed.

Even if we don't yet know into what.
